Have you eyed the LTE version of Amazon's Kindle Fire HD 8.9, yet remained skittish about buying such a relatively expensive tablet sight-unseen? AT&T is now willing to accommodate you: stop by an AT&T retail store from April 5th onward and you can pick up a 32GB model in person. The carrier is also offering an alternative purchase model. The $399 contract-free purchase is still available for those who want their freedom, but the initial price can drop to $249 for anyone willing to sign a two-year contract for a data plan. While either is still a lot of money to throw at Amazon's ecosystem, it's good to know that we can at least minimize the qualms surrounding an impulse purchase.

We might have spent a few hours toying with Samsung's new mobile hardware, but some tinkerers over at XDA-Developers claim have had enough time to root the Galaxy S 4, already. This means those (very) early adopters might be able to peruse the inner workings as soon as it arrives on store shelves. There's a video of the process after the break and you can pick up all the necessary custom ROM files (and warnings ofnot to meddle with what you do not understand) at the source. There is one tiny caveat to the news, however, as the rooting magic is focused squarely on the Exynos 5 Octamodel for now. According to SAM Mobile, several batches of the new Galaxy phone are rumored to be packing Qualcomm's Snapdragon 600 instead of Samsung's homemade chip series. An official spokesperson from the UK branch has confirmed that it'll arrive in the there with the Snapdragon processor.
Update: Perhaps we were a little too zealous. Notable smartphone tinkerer Chainfirehas taken to Google Plus to note that this would be a pretty huge accomplishment given the limited number of handsets currently out there. Most of the XDA-Developersthread details custom ROMs, while the Galaxy S 4 apparently has a few extra tricks to slow down the rooting process. Read Chainfire's full breakdown in More Coverage. Apologies for any confusion.

We first encountered Ergo Electronics at last year's Gadget Show Live, and since then the Birmingham-based tablet maker has graduated from its humble back-of-the-hall origins to become a major player. Its product range has swelled beyond its originalbudget ICS slates with a range of AIO PCs, thin-and-light laptops and even a Windows 8 tablet that has more than a few strong hints of a KIRF Surface about it. Now it's launched the GoNote Mini, a scaled down 7-inch version of the education-ready tablet / netbook hybrid that's been doing the rounds since last summer. We got to spend a few minutes playing around with the first production prototype and if you'd like to know more, after the break is where you want to be.

Calls the Google OS its 'new home' and moves in on April 4th.
Facebook last announced an unveiling back in January, inviting press to 'come and see what we're building.' Therumour mill suggested the product was the long-expected Facebook phone or OS, but instead, we were treated to the underwhelming unmasking of Graph Search.
Well, it's a new quarter, and Facebook has again requested the presence of the industry, this time to 'come and see our new home on Android' on Thursday, April 4th.
Conjecture has churned up talk of the Facebook phone (again), an Android OS laced with Facebook functionality, and some reports have gone as far as to say that the unveiling will be in partnership with HTC, while the product tagline is 'more than just an app'.
John Strand of Strand Consult, said:0 "It doesn’t matter that the concept will be launched with an Android operating system on an HTC smartphone. If Facebook's new concept works, it will become the standard for phones and operating systems. Not only are OTT companies such as Facebook rendering mobile operators into dumb pipes, but they are making all smartphones into dumb terminals. If all users want is Facebook, then there are few ways that operators and phone manufacturers can differentiate with services or hardware.
"Facebook announcement is an important milestone for investors, for it demonstrates that the gold mine for Facebook is not advertising, operating systems or hardware. The key for Facebook is to monetize its users for the very communication it offers: SMS, voice, and data enabled services."

We’ve seen a fair number of hacks like this one that reuse a Kindle basically just for its ePaper display. [HaHaBird] has this device hanging on his refrigerator to display the weather and remind him about recycling day. It kind of make us wonder why we’re not seeing cheap ePaper modules on the hobby market?
The concept isn’t new, but [HaHaBird] does move it along just a little bit. He started by following the guide which [Matt] wrote after pulling off the original Kindle weather display hack. It uses a separate computer running a script that polls the Internet for weather data and generates a vector graphic like the one seen above. The Kindle then loads the image once every five minutes thanks to a cron job on the rooted device. But why stop there? [HaHaBird] tweaked the script to include a reminder about his municipality’s irregular recycling schedule.
Don’t overlook the quality of the hardware side of this hack. With its prominent place in the kitchen he wanted a nicely finished look. This was achieved by building a frame out of cherry and routing passages on the back to make room for the extension cable (so it could hang in landscape orientation) and a toggle to hold the Kindle firmly in place. Additional information on the build is available here.

Pre-orders for micro-console now open at £79.99 as development kits land at studios
UK retailer GAME has snapped up the exclusive rights to sell PlayJam’s tiny Android TV console GameStick when it launches in June.
Pre-orders for the micro-games system have begun today, and can be purchased from the website for £79.99. The console will be available for pre-order in-store from June.
The news follows the announcement that Madfinger and Hutch Games will be bringing Shadowgun and Smash Cops to the console as launch titles, available for free.
Development kits meanwhile are expected to have begun shipping to developers this week, with pre-production prototypes containing different components for de-bugging and loading apps as well as extra features specifically for game development.
“We're really excited to be the only UK retailer to offer this product to the gaming community,” said GAME category director Charlotte Knight.

Not too long after the Samsung Galaxy S 4 was announced, we started hearing whispers of a "miniature" version of the device -- which makes sense, given the Galaxy S III had a smaller sidekick of its own. Today, however, Bloomberg reported the unannounced device is indeed coming soon after the flagship makes its appearance at the end of April. If it follows a similar pattern to its bite-sized predecessor, it likely will be offered in Europe as a lower-cost alternative to the Galaxy S 4. The device is rumored to offer a dual-core 1.6GHz processor, a 4.3-inch display and 8MP camera. Sadly, no official details were given, but we've reached out to Samsung officials for comment and will update when we receive word.
Update: Samsung pinged back with the following comment, which doesn't do much towards confirming or denying whether or not the GS 4 mini is indeed on the horizon. A spokesperson informed us: "We have not announced the product mentioned in the Bloomberg story."

With a lot of fanfare the Indian Government had launched a $35 tablet named Aakash (The Sky). Despite skepticism, the government went ahead with the project. But delays in production and deployment of the tablet have left the project in risk of failure. The manufacturer has been unable to supply the required 100,000 units, and a deadline of March 31has been set. The new minister Pallam Raju says: 'Aakash is only a tablet... there are other such devices as well. While work will continue to develop it and increase its productivity, manufacturing is obviously a problem.'"For what it's worth, they did manage to ship 17,000 of them. It looks like meeting the deadline is impossible and the $35 tablet is dead.

The iTunes app store had a head start compared to its competitors and as a result had a huge selection of apps that was unsurpassed for a long time. But now Android has closed the gap and caught up and is providing stiff competition. Android and Apple have both been providing great phones for gamers. Due to the screen size and attention to details such as how comfortable the phones fit into your hand and also important things like image resolution and faster processors, these smartphones are now compatible for use with fantastic games that are on a par with games console games in terms of graphics and how realistic the experience is.
Both app stores provide most of the same games; however the App Store often charges 99 cents for the same games that are free on Android. If you are looking to go a little easier on your pocket, this could be a significant factor for you. Some people believe that the small amount of money apple charges is worth it because they get the best developers and the best quality apps overall. It's no secret that although you have access to a huge amount of apps on the android market due to it being open source, you often have to sift through a lot of rubbish.
Mobile casinos such as those found at http://www.onlinecasinoaustralia.com.au are huge in the gaming market, and this is one thing that the Android Market do not provide. Google do not allow real money mobile casino apps in the Android store. Their reasons are to do with not being able to control whether or not under-age people have access to the gambling games. The app store on the other hand allows casino apps, although this gives Apple the edge on Android as online casinos are so hugely popular, it's not too bad for Android as you can easily download casino software directly from the online casino sites which might even be better as you can get access to unique Android casino welcome bonuses and promotions for games such as Online slots and Poker.

GameStick is here ... er, sort of. The development units are at least here at GDC 2013, quietly hanging out behind a nondescript computer monitor running a few Android games paired with a Nyko wireless controller. That's right, it wasn't running with the proprietary GameStick controller, but a third-party wireless -- we'll go hands-on with the company's internally built controller later this evening, and thusly we didn't want to offer a half-impression with the third-party units available on the show floor. Stay tuned for more, and take a gander at the gallery below for now.

Travelers face a dilemma: they'll often leave a phone in airplane mode to avoidexpensive roaming rates or a foreign SIM, but staying offline can break the translation services that might prove vital in a strange land. Google must have heard their plight, as a new version of Google Translate on Android adds the option to download offline packs for 50 different languages. They aren't as full-featured as their cloud-based equivalents, although there's good reason for the trimmed dictionaries -- at least some packs are over 150MB each. Unless space is just too tight, however, anyone with at least Android 2.3 can ask dónde el baño es without risking some bill shock.
